Enjoy this representation of our solar system made out of solid walnut, various wood veneers, and acrylic. It's designed to be enjoyed during the day as well as at night, as each planet and the sun is backlit casting a subtle glow.
The body of the piece is over 44" wide, carved out of slab of gorgeous walnut with a poplar frame. Each solar body is designed individually using a homemade and shaped veneer attached to acrylic to allow light through:
The Sun is made out of birds-eye maple, and hand-dyed to have a warm orange-to-yellow gradient. It's backed by yellow acrylic.
Mercury is mahogany, backed by smoke acrylic.
Venus is cherry, with orange acrylic.
Earth is maple, hand-dyed with a focus on the Atlantic ocean, backed by blue acrylic.
The Moon is mahogany, backed with yellow acrylic.
Mars is bloodwood, with a bit of sapwood to show the polar ice cap. It is backed by red acrylic.
Jupiter is made of maple, hand-dyed to show it's beautiful colors. It's backed by light blue acrylic.
Saturn is made of striped yellowheart, with maple rings. It's backed by yellow acrylic.
Uranus is made of maple, dyed with a turquoise tint, and backed by light blue acrylic. It's also oriented vertically to reflect it's unusual spin!
Neptune is also made of maple, and has been dyed a lavender, with a burgundy acrylic.
And little Pluto is here, made out of a tiny piece of sycamore, backed with smoke acrylic.
The backlights can be powered by 4 AA batteries, or the lights can be powered continuously using a provided USB cable plugged into any USB brick (not included).
