I call this The Build Box. It has been carefully designed around hobbies that involve lots of small parts, including Lego and other brick-building hobbies.
When not in use, it's a piece of art you can display on your shelf. This specific design features what I call a brick mandala, featuring beautiful striped tiger maple in a circular pattern, with "studs" engraved into the surface. The brick pattern is repeated, very softly, in the cherry top in an expanding array. The front of the box has a dimensional "brick" embedded in the face, with studs that allow you to easily open the box.
Upon opening the lid, you'll first see the small-parts tray. This is made from solid wood, milled out with shallow, rounded sections designed perfectly for sorting tiny 1x1 and 1x2 bricks, while allowing easy grabbing. The edges of the tray have been marked with a stud ruler on one side (for quickly figuring out the length of longer pieces), and a centimeter ruler on the other.
Lift out that tray, and you'll find a sorting area for larger pieces. This section uses clear acrylic (to make it easier to find parts), which can be re-arranged depending on what size compartments you need.
On the lid, there's a shelf that flips down. This shelf includes adjustable spring arms to hold open the pages of a physical book, and is sturdy enough to hold a tablet if you prefer digital instructions. The lid stops at a specific angle that has been tested to help reduce glare on your instructions, and is held open with brass hardware.
Pausing work for a while? You can put the small parts tray back in, fold up the book shelf, and close the lid. This keeps paws and little fingers out of your pieces.
The bottom has small rubber feet to hold the box in place while you work. It works equally well in your lap, sitting on the sofa.
